Welcome back to the Stories from a Woman's Heart Podcast. I'm your host, Deanna Byrd, and I'm so happy to have you join us for our summer devotional series. These are short, sweet, and made to inspire. I hope you absolutely love them. I want to talk about something the Lord has laid on my heart recently. Be a wise builder. So, what does it mean to be a wise builder? Well, in Matthew 7, 24 through 27, Jesus paints a simple yet powerful picture. A wise builder builds on the rock while a foolish one builds on the sand. When the storms come, and they will, only one house will stand. It reminds me of the song that we used to sing growing up in children's church or a Sunday school. The wise man built his house upon the rock, and the foolish man built his house upon the sand. And if you've ever listened to that song, or you sang it in church or children's church, you know how the story ends. So what does it mean to build a home? What does it mean to be a wise builder? Building a home, it's not something you rush. It requires intention. The ground must be cleared, the soil tested, and a firm foundation laid before anything else begins. If that step is ignored, the entire structure is at risk. Cracks will form, doors won't align, and in the worst case, everything can collapse. And the same is true for our own lives. How do we start with the right foundation? Well, everything begins with Christ. When we listen to Him, trust Him, and follow His Word, we are building on solid ground. Prayer, fasting, serving, and daily obedience are not just actions, they are how we stay rooted. 1 Corinthians 3 11 says, For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. Christ is our firm foundation. How do we build up on that? Well, we build our relationships with care. Healthy relationships do not happen by accident. They are built through listening, honest communication, encouragement, and love. Trust grows when we are consistent and genuine. However, selfishness, deception, and harshness can slowly tear down what took time to build. What's the next thing that we build up? We need to be mindful of our words. Our words carry weight that can heal or hurt, build up or tear down. Choosing to speak life, even in difficult moments, is a part of building wisely. Proverbs 1821 says, Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words. What's another way that we can build up on Christ is our firm foundation. We can honor God in our work. So no matter where you are, no matter what you're doing, or no matter what your occupation is, if it's being a caregiver or if it is working at the local grocery store bagging groceries, or if you work at a local fast food restaurant, your job matters. Your work matters. Be dependable in that job. Be kind in it. Be willing to help. Even in moments of frustration, choose to respond with grace. As Colossians 3, 23 through 24 reminds us, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for human masters. Since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward, it is the Lord Christ you are serving." Another way that we can build on the foundation of Christ to be faithful with what we've been given. Our finances are a part of our foundation too. When we steward them wisely, giving, saving, and spending with care, we create stability, not just for today, but for the future. First Corinthians 4 2 says, Moreover, it is required of stewards that may be found faithful. So it's important that we do not skip the process because we cannot build strong lives on weak foundations. God in his love has already done the hardest part. Through Jesus, he cleared away our sin and made a way for us to stand firm. Now we build daily by staying close to him, learning his word, and walking in obedience. Storms will come and challenges will test what we have built. But when our lives are grounded in Christ, we will not be shaken. So I ask of you to take your time, be intentional, pay attention to the foundation, build firmly, build wisely, build with your heart anchored in him. And let's all be wise builders.
